A Fleur De Lis

Louisville’s symbol, the Fleur De Lis, was adopted in 1780, two years following our city’s founding. Louisville was named in honor of King Louis XVI of France, whose soldiers aided Americans during the Revolutionary war. In the 1700s, the Fleur De Lis was a symbol of power in France, and therefore chosen by our city in order to pay homage to French royalty.

“ A handsome horse is the highest pride of a Kentuckian”.

Kentucky’s rolling hills and ample bluegrass, known as “horse country”, have presented the ideal venue to raise and race horses for centuries. The state’s beloved tradition would forever mark the world in 1875 with it’s renowned sporting event, the first Kentucky Derby. The Derby runs the first Saturday each May, at Louisville’s famous Churchill Downs.
